During the holiday season, many Americans get out their wallets and donate more money and goods to charity organizations. But in recent years, the economic downturn has made it difficult for some people to give as much as they’d like. How has the economy impacted charitable donations this year, and how many are planning on making donations during this holiday season?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 12% of respondents said that they give to charity at least once per month. 27% said they give to charity several times per year. 24% said they give once or twice per year. 24% said they rarely give money or goods to charity. And 13% said they never give to charity organizations.
40% of those who sometimes give to charity said that they are more likely to give during the holiday season than they are the rest of the year. Just 7% said they are actually less likely to give to charity during the holiday season. And 53% said they are just as likely to donate to charity during the holidays as they are during the rest of the year.
46% of donators said they find organizations to give to through their own research. 28% said they find charities through churches or other religious organizations. 20% find charities through stores or similar businesses. Another 20% said they simply donate to the organizations that ask them. 19% said they find charities through their workplace, school, or similar affiliations. And 10% said they find organizations to give to through other avenues such as family and friends.
As for the poor economy the last few years, 53% of overall respondents said that they have not been able to donate as much to charity as they would have normally. Just 6% said that they have donated more over the past few years due to increased need. And 41% said that the economy has not had an impact on their charitable giving habits.
