As many popular television shows, along with some new ones, return this fall, some viewers are tuning in at the designated time slots. But some are using technology to watch their favorite shows after they air, whether through DVR, TiVo, or even online. So how much do these options impact show viewership, and what types of shows are most likely to be affected by late viewers.
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 75% of respondents said they watch TV every day. 10% said they watch TV every few days. 4% said they watch about once per week. 1% said they just watch TV every few weeks. 7% said they rarely watch TV. And just 4% said they never watch TV.
Of those viewers, 51% said they regularly watch dramas. 50% said they watch sitcoms. 35% said they watch reality TV. 34% watch sci-fi or fantasy shows. 32% watch variety shows or talk shows. And 22% said they watch other types of TV such as history, news and sports.
Overall, 14% of TV viewers said that they always record shows and watch them later. 13% said they DVR the shows they watch most of the time. 9% said they DVR shows about half the time. 12% said they rarely DVR the shows they watch. And 52% said they never record shows and watch them later. Viewers of dramas, sitcoms, and reality TV were the most likely to DVR or record shows. Talk show and variety show viewers were the least likely to say they often record shows and watch them later.
Of those who DVR shows, 71% said they do so because they are busy or not home when their shows air. 50% said they record shows if they’re watching something else at the same time. And 43% said they just prefer watching shows without the commercials.
Another way TV viewers watch shows after they air is either online or through streaming services. 11% of overall respondents said that they always watch shows online or through streaming services. 10% said they watch shows online most of the time. 15% said they watch shows online about half the time. 34% said they rarely watch shows online. And 31% said they never watch TV shows online. Sci-fi and fantasy viewers were the most likely to watch shows online either always or most of the time.
