Facebook is rolling out a new feature to its users that will allow them to purchase actual gifts for one another such as gift cards, food, and home items, and then exchange them directly on the site. Since many people already use Facebook to wish one another a happy birthday and notify friends of major life events, this could prove to be a new source of revenue for the company. But will consumers take to the idea? How many Facebook users would consider buying Facebook gifts for their friends and family?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 9% of US consumers said they always purchase gifts online. Another 17% said they usually purchase gifts online. 30% said they buy gifts online about half the time. 28% said they rarely purchase gifts online. And 16% said they never purchase gifts online.
Just 4% of consumers said they always buy gift cards as gifts for others. 13% said they mostly buy gift cards when they have to purchase gifts. 33% said they buy gift cards about half the time. Another 33% said they rarely buy gift cards when they have to buy gifts. And 18% said they never buy gift cards.
Overall, 85% of respondents said they currently have a Facebook account. Of those users, 34% said they always use it to wish friends and family happy birthday. 27% said they use Facebook to say happy birthday to friends most of the time. 14% say happy birthday on Facebook about half the time. 15% said they rarely use Facebook to wish happy birthday to others. And 10% said they never say happy birthday on Facebook.
Just 8% of Facebook users said that they would definitely use Facebook gifts to purchase gift cards or tangible items for friends and family. 26% said they would probably buy Facebook gifts. 42% said they would probably not buy Facebook gifts. And 25% of Facebook users said they would definitely not buy Facebook gifts for their friends and family.
