With the recent release of the iPhone 5 and the new iOS 6, many users noticed a new maps app in place of the old Google Maps. The general consensus seemed to be that the new app offered much less detail and was not as user friendly as Google’s version. But what do people who have tried the app think about it? And how many use other types of mobile maps apps?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 24% of respondents said they use Google Maps often. Another 40% said they sometimes use Google Maps. 14% said they have used Google Maps at some point. 10% said they’ve never used Google Maps, but they do use similar services like Mapquest. And 13% said they’ve never used Google Maps or similar services.
26% of overall respondents said they use Google Maps on their phone or mobile device. 8% said they have a similar mobile mapping app. And 14% said they have a GPS or similar device. People who use Google Maps online were 7% more likely to use it on their mobile device. And iPhone owners were 34% more likely to use the Google Maps app.
In general, 46% of users said they are very satisfied with their maps app or device, and 47% said they are somewhat satisfied. Of those who use Google Maps, 57% said they are very satisfied, as opposed to 42% of those who use other mapping apps. Only 29% of those who have a GPS device said they are very satisfied.
4% of mobile map users said they currently own an iPhone 5. 25% own an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S. 10% own an iPhone 3GS or older model. And another 11% said they don’t own an iPhone, but they have an iPad or iPod Touch. And of those respondents, 36% said they have updated to iOS 6.
40% of respondents who have an iPhone 5 or have updated their other Apple devices to iOS 6 said that they have tried the new maps app and they actually like it. Just 5% said they don’t like it. 21% said they have yet to make up their mind about it. And 34% said they haven’t used the app yet.
