A Los Angeles restaurant has recently implemented a new policy that allows customers to receive a 5% discount on their bill by leaving their phone with the receptionist during their entire meal. Cell phone use has been a major issue for those concerned with restaurant etiquette, so could a policy like this catch on at more businesses? Are customers interested in the discount and how do they feel about cell phone use at the dinner table?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, just 2% of respondents said they eat at restaurants daily, but 13% said they eat at restaurants a few times per week, and another 22% said they eat at restaurants about once per week. 19% said they go out to eat a few times per month. 18% said they go about once per month. And 24% said they rarely go. Only 4% said they never go out to eat.
Just 9% of restaurant goers said they often use their cell phones while they’re out to eat. 26% said they sometimes use their phones at restaurants, and 34% said they rarely use their cell phones at restaurants. 31% of restaurant customers said they never use their cell phones while out to eat.
23% of restaurant goers said that someone they were with has used their cell phone at a restaurant, and they found it rude. 59% said that they have been with someone who has used their cell phone at a restaurant, but they didn’t mind. And 17% said they’ve never been with someone else who used their cell phone at a restaurant.
As for the new policy being implemented in one California restaurant, 18% of respondents said they would definitely leave their cell phone with a hostess for the length of their meal to receive a 5% discount. Another 27% said they would consider doing so. 16% said that they would consider leaving their cell phone behind for a larger discount. And 40% of respondents said they would not part with their cell phone for a meal.
