Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week will take place next week, and many Americans are already getting excited to see their favorite shark stars grace their television screens for an entire week. How many viewers will tune into the specials again this year and how many will check out Shark Week for the first time? And will a special event like Shark Week gain a lot of attention and buzz online?

Shark Week Viewers
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 28% of respondents who said they will likely watch Shark Week this year said they always watch it. 44% of viewers said they sometimes tune in for Shark Week. 15% said they have caught it once or twice before. And 14% said they plan to watch Shark Week for the first time ever this year.
90% of Shark Week viewers said they will watch it on TV, and 16% said they plan to watch at least some of Shark Week online. 4% of viewers said they might watch Shark Week in other ways.
Online Interaction
Aside from watching online, there are other ways viewers can interact with Shark Week. 14% of viewers said they definitely plan to post on social media about Shark Week. Another 31% said they will probably make posts on social media about Shark Week. 45% said they will probably not post about Shark Week. And just 11% said they will definitely not post about Shark Week.
In addition, 33% of respondents said they have or will visit the official Shark Week website, which has schedules, exclusive videos, and more. 19% said they will follow Shark Week or The Discovery Channel on Facebook. 10% said they will follow Shark Week or the Discovery Channel on Twitter. And 11% said they will follow Shark Week or The Discovery Channel on other sites.
Shark Stars
So which sharks are viewers most excited to tune in for? A whopping 59% of survey takers said that the great white is their favorite shark star. 13% said they prefer whale sharks. 11% claim the hammerhead as their favorite. 8% said the mako shark is their favorite. And 9% have other favorite sharks.
