Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week is currently airing. The week full of specials has become increasingly popular each year. How many viewers have watched this year compared with recent years? And what makes Shark Week so popular?
Shark Week Viewers
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 12% of respondents said that they have watched many shows so far during this year’s Shark Week. Another 18% said they’ve watched one or two shows. 17% said they haven’t watched any so far, but they might still do so during the rest of Shark Week. And 54% said they have no plans to watch any Shark Week programming this year.
In general, 12% said they watch Shark Week every year. Another 24% said they sometimes watch Shark Week. 12% said they’ve only watched Shark Week once or twice. And 52% said they’ve never watched Shark Week.
Shark Week Technology
Watching TV and movies online has become increasingly popular as well. So how does that trend match up with Shark Week viewers? 92% of those who have or will watch Shark Week this year said they’ve watched on TV. And just 18% said they have or will watch Shark Week online.
Social Media has also become a popular place for viewers to talk and share information about Shark Week. However, just 13% said they have or will definitely post about Shark Week on social media this year. 29% said they will probably post about Shark Week on social media. 40% said they probably won’t post about Shark Week this year. And 18% of viewers said they definitely won’t share anything about Shark Week on social media this year.
Because of the variety of shows, there are a lot of different viewers and different reasons why they choose to watch Shark Week programming. 62% of those who have watched Shark Week said that they like it for the educational value. 59% said they appreciate the entertainment value. And 20% like Shark Week because of all the hype and popularity surrounding it.
