Back to School Shopping Survey: More Shopping Online for Supplies

It’s that time of year – families and students of all ages are preparing to go back to school. And that means it’s time for back to school shopping. Commercials and other ads are already announcing a variety of sales and new items. But how many have already started their back to school shopping for the year?

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 13% of respondents said that they are heading back to school this fall. Another 18% said they have kids heading back to school. And 6% said that another member of their household is heading back to school in the fall.

Of those who are either going back to school or have another member of their household going back to school, 50% said they definitely plan to do at least some back to school shopping. Another 29% said they will probably do some back to school shopping. 16% said they probably won’t do any shopping this year. And just 6% said they definitely won’t.

More specifically, 31% of shoppers said they plan to do at least some of their back to school shopping online. 38% said they will probably do some of their shopping online. 25% said they probably won’t shop online. And 5% said they definitely won’t. That’s a significant increase from just a few years ago. In a July 2012 survey, just 16% of respondents said they definitely planned to do some back to school shopping online.

So how many have already completed some of their shopping early? 21% of respondents said they have already done all of their back to school shopping for the year. 45% said they’ve done some of it. And 34% said they haven’t done any back to school shopping yet.

Popular Items

And what are the most popular types of items on the lists of back to school shoppers? 81% of shoppers said they plan to buy standard school supplies. 75% plan to buy clothing items. 57% plan to buy books. 29% plan to buy electronics. And 15% plan to buy dorm or home items.
