Back to School Survey: Sales Likely to Impact Shopping Decisions

Summer is nearly over, so many Americans are about to head back to school. And with that comes back-to-school shopping and sales. How many are planning on back-to-school shopping this year compared with past years? And what types of items are they planning to buy?

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 11% of respondents said they are going back to school this fall. 21% said their kids are going to school this fall. And 7% said that another member of their household will be attending school in the fall.

28% of those respondents said that they plan to do a lot of back-to-school shopping this year. 42% said they have just a few things they need to buy. 14% said they might do some back-to-school shopping. And 16% said they don’t plan to do any shopping this fall. In an August 2012 survey, 37% of respondents said they had a lot of shopping to do for the new school year, and another 37% said they had some shopping to do.

Shopping Decisions

73% of back-to-school shoppers said they plan to buy some miscellaneous school supplies. 69% plan to buy clothing. 42% will need to purchase books. 22% will need to purchase electronics. 13% plan to buy dorm or home items. And 3% have other types of back-to-school items they plan to buy.

Overall, 41% of shoppers said that sales and coupons have a large impact on their back-to-school shopping decisions. 43% said that these things somewhat impact their shopping decisions. 14% said sales don’t really impact their decisions. And 2% said that sales don’t impact their shopping decisions at all.

Shopping Habits

22% of overall respondents said that they go back-to-school shopping every year. 42% said they have done so many times. 11% said they have just done so once or twice. And 25% said that they have never gone back-to-school shopping.
