For many people, the summer months mean lots of camping. Opting for camping trips over more conventional types of travel can save people money, allow them to spend more time outdoors, and give them the opportunity to visit a huge variety of places. So how many people go camping regularly? And how many are planning to do so this year?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 11% of respondents said they usually go camping multiple times a year. Another 11% said they usually camp about once a year. 13% go on camping trips every few years. 29% have gone at least once. And 37% said they’ve never actually gone camping.
In general, the types of places that people enjoy going camping include state and national parks, near lakes and mountains, and on beaches. The most popular states for camping among respondents are Florida, Maine, New Hampshire, Michigan, New York and Minnesota. The most popular parks or specific locations mentioned were Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, and the Adirondacks.
Of course, camping can be a lot easier if you have the right equipment. In general, 36% of respondents said they own some kind of camping equipment. 82% of those respondents own tents. 81% own sleeping bags. 65% have some kind of outdoor cooking equipment. 11% own RVs. And 11% own other types of camping equipment such as foldable chairs and air mattresses. The most popular brands for camp equipment include Coleman, REI, Columbia and Nike.
Looking forward, just 24% of respondents said they are likely to go camping at some point this summer. 48% said they would be very unlikely to do so. Those who have gone camping in the past were 11% more likely to have camping plans this year. And just 4% of those who have never camped before said they have plans to go for the first time this year.
