College degrees have become increasingly important for American professionals. But with the increased cost of higher education, some are beginning to doubt whether those degrees are really worth it. So just how many people have college degrees? And how many feel that those degrees have paid off for them?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 34% of respondents said they already have a college degree. Another 6% actually have multiple college degrees. 10% said they don’t currently have a degree, but they are working on it. And 50% don’t have a college degree at all.
In general, 36% of overall respondents think that college degrees are very important. 44% think college degrees are somewhat important. 13% think they are not really important. And 8% think they are not important at all.
Of those who have at least one degree, just 23% said they currently work in a field that is directly related to their college degree. 25% said they work in a field that is somewhat related to their field of study. And 52% said that they don’t work in a field that’s related to their college degree at all.
But even those who don’t work in a related field seem to be happy with their education. 53% of college graduates said they definitely feel their degree was worth the cost. 27% said that they feel their degree was somewhat worth the cost. And 20% don’t feel like their degree was worth it.
Looking forward, just 11% of respondents said they definitely plan to attend college in the future. 19% said they will probably attend college in the future. 33% said they probably won’t attend any college in the future. And 38% said they definitely don’t plan to pursue any future degrees.
