Crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter have been around for years, but some recent high-profile projects have more people talking about the power of crowdfunding. Has the popularity of these kinds of sites grown over the past year? And what types of projects are most likely to draw in supporters?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, just 4% of respondents said that they have donated to many projects on crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter. Another 9% said that they have donated to just one or two projects. And 87% said they have never donated to any projects on crowdfunding sites. In a May 2012 survey, just 7% said they had donated to crowdfunding projects.
Of those who have donated, 51% said they learned about the projects from family or friends. 47% said they learned about crowdfunding projects from social media. 25% learned about projects from other websites. 24% learned about them from news articles. 10% said they learned about crowdfunding projects from advertisements. And 4% said they learned about projects in other ways such as online videos.
There are many different types of projects that donors can choose to support on these sites. 43% of supporters said they have donated to entertainment projects. 37% have donated to projects relating to the arts. 35% have donated to technology projects. 31% have donated to gaming projects. 29% have donated to food projects. And 8% have donated to other types of projects like charity organizations.
Overall, just 6% of respondents said they definitely plan to donate to more crowdfunding projects in the future. 20% said they will probably donate to crowdfunding projects in the future. 55% said they probably won’t donate to any crowdfunding projects. And 19% said they definitely do not plan to donate. Of those who have already donated to crowdfunding projects, 39% said they definitely plan to donate in the future, and 49% said they probably will.
