Crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter have grown steadily in recent years. Last week, the first crowdfunded feature film, The Veronica Mars Movie, was released in theaters. Since the project was announced, even more people have explored funding major projects through these crowdfunding sites. So just how many people have donated to crowdfunding projects? And how many plan to do so in the future?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, just 6% of respondents said they have donated to projects or startups on crowdfunding sites many times. 13% said they have donated to crowdfunding projects once or twice. And 82% of respondents said they’ve never donated to crowdfunding projects. Those numbers have increased slightly since a March 2013 survey, when just 4% had donated to multiple crowdfunding projects, and 9% had donated to one or two of them.
57% of people who have donated to crowdfunding projects said they learned about them on social media. 44% learned about crowdfunding projects through family or friends. 25% learned about crowdfunding projects on other websites. 21% learned about them through news articles. And 13% learned about them through advertisements.
Types of Projects
So what are the most popular types of projects on crowdfunding sites? 43% of crowdfunding donors said they’ve donated to entertainment projects. 35% have donated to technology projects. 31% have donated to arts projects. 29% have donated to games. 22% have donated to food related projects. And 18% have donated to other types of projects, such as medical, religious, and political projects.
Looking forward, just 8% said that they definitely plan to donate to more crowdfunding projects in the future. 28% said they will probably donate to crowdfunding projects in the future. 43% said they probably won’t donated to crowdfunding projects in the future. And 22% definitely do not plan to donate to crowdfunding projects in the future. Of those who have already donated, 31% said they definitely plan to donate again, and 57% said they will probably donate again.
In the March 2013 survey, just 6% of respondents said they definitely planned to donate to future crowdfunding projects. And 20% said they would probably donate in the future. So not only is the number of actual donors growing, but also the number of people considering taking part in the future.
