Healthy Eating Survey: More Than Half Satisfied With Health Food Options

America’s obesity problem has been prevalent for years. And food and beverage companies have often been seen as part of the problem. But some companies recently informed the government of some changes they are making, cutting out large portions and certain high-calorie options. Are Americans noticing any difference? And how many are aiming for a healthy eating lifestyle?

Healthy Habits

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, just 15% of US respondents said they consider themselves to be healthy eaters. 50% said they think their eating habits are somewhat healthy. 26% consider their eating habits to be not very healthy. And 9% said their eating habits are not healthy at all. In a December 2011 survey, just 8% said they considered themselves to be very healthy and 52% said they were somewhat healthy.

Healthy Goals

Overall, 40% said they are happy with their current eating habits. 42% said they would like to eat healthier. But just 18% said that they are actively trying to eat healthier. In the December 2011 survey, just 23% said they were happy with their eating habits, 47% said they wanted to eat healthier, and 31% said they were actively trying to eat healthier.

Healthy Options

Many people’s eating habits are greatly affected by the food that is available around them. Just 21% said they are very satisfied with the amount of healthy food options available in their local stores and restaurants. 53% said they are somewhat satisfied with the healthy food options in their area. 19% said they are somewhat unsatisfied with the healthy food options. And 7% said they are very unsatisfied.

More specifically, 54% of respondents said they are satisfied with the portion sizes available in their local stores and restaurants. 22% said they think the portion sizes are too small. And 25% said they think the portion sizes are too large.
