Dogs Survey: Nearly All Future Owners Open to Rescuing

Today is National Dog Day, a day created to celebrate man’s best friend while also calling attention to the large number of dogs in shelters around the country that are waiting to be adopted. Dogs have long been considered one of the most popular house pets. But there are currently several different ways for people to get dogs. So how many currently own kanine companions and how many would consider adopting from shelters in the future?

Dog Owners

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 71% of respondents said they have a generally positive opinion of dogs. However, just 12% currently own multiple dogs. And 24% own just one dog. 42% said they have owned dogs in the past, but don’t currently. And 23% of respondents have never owned a dog. The most popular dog breeds mentioned by respondents include labs, golden retrievers, german shepherds, huskies, poodles and collies.

Dog Adoptions

Of those who currently own dogs, 35% said they went to a shelter or rescue organization to adopt them. 25% have gotten dogs from a breeder. 15% have gone to pet shops. 35% have gotten dogs from friends or family members. And 8% have gotten them from other sources, such as through classified ads in newspapers or online.

Future Owners

Looking forward, 31% of respondents said they are likely to get a new dog within the next five years. And of those respondents, 90% said they would be likely to at least consider adopting their next dog from a shelter or rescue organization. So while there are currently lots of dogs in need of good homes, there’s still hope that there may just be enough caring people out there to help them.
