Early Holiday Shopping Survey: Early Shoppers Likely to Go Online

It’s about that time when people around the country are starting to get serious about their holiday gift shopping. While the traditional start of the holiday shopping season is thought to be the day after Thanksgiving, it seems that shoppers and businesses are increasingly focusing on earlier efforts. So how many people are taking part in early holiday shopping? And how might that impact businesses?

Holiday Shoppers

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 57% of respondents said they have yet to start their holiday gift shopping this year. 18% said they’ve done just a bit of shopping so far. 5% have gotten about half of their gift shopping done. 8% said they’ve completed most of their holiday shopping already. And 5% have done all of theirs. The remaining 9% said they don’t do any holiday gift shopping.

In general, it seems that early shoppers tend to gravitate more toward online stores. 69% of those who have done at least some of their holiday shopping already said they’ve shopped online. And 55% have shopped in stores.

Future Shoppers

Looking forward, 46% of respondents said that they are likely to start their holiday gift shopping, or do more of it, between now and Thanksgiving. 35% said they are unlikely to do any holiday shopping between now and Thanksgiving. And 19% are neutral or undecided.

Holiday Advertising

Those shoppers have certainly had an impact on advertisers, or maybe the other way around. 75% of respondents said they’ve seen at least some advertisements geared toward holiday shoppers already. However, just 47% think that holiday ads before Thanksgiving can be effective.
