Ello is a new ad-free social networking site that’s built on the premise of being the anti-Facebook. For years, Facebook has dominated the social media world. And in that time it has built up a huge database of user information that it now uses to target advertisements and similar materials. So some users are now looking for a site that won’t collect or use their information in this way. Could Ello fill the void for such a site? Or are users generally happy enough with Facebook to stick with it?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 47% of respondents said they currently use multiple different social networking sites or apps. 32% said they just use one social media platform. And 21% don’t use any.
So what do these users think about Facebook in general? 20% said that they have a very positive opinion of Facebook. 53% said they have a somewhat positive opinion of Facebook. 20% have a somewhat negative opinion of Facebook. And just 6% have a very negative opinion of Facebook.
Social Media Ads
In general, 43% of social media users said they dislike seeing ads on social media. And just 17% said they like seeing ads on social media. 37% had no opinion. And just 3% said they don’t ever see ads on social media sites.
But in terms of Facebook, the site doesn’t just host advertisements, but it also uses people’s information to better target those advertisements. And 60% of social media users said they don’t like when sites use their personal information for ad targeting purposes. Just 18% said they like when sites do this. And 21% said they have no opinion.
So looking forward, what are Ello’s chances of taking over as the new popular social media site? 9% of social media users said they’ve already signed up to use Ello, though it currently requires an invitation to gain access. Another 11% said they have at least heard of Ello. And 80% said they’ve never heard of Ello.
