Flip Phones Survey: Consumers Unlikely to Support Comeback

Smartphones have grown massively in popularity over the past several years, pushing out the former king of cell phones – the flip phone. But now, it seems that flip phones might be making a comeback. A handful of famous actresses, designers and other celebrities have been spotted with retro style flip phones in recent weeks. But would everyday consumers be open to a flip phone comeback?

Flip Phones

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, just 18% of respondents said they currently own a flip phone. However, another 59% said they’ve owned a flip phone at some point in the past.

Of those respondents who have owned them, 65% said they are or were satisfied with their flip phones. 19% were neutral. And just 16% said they were unsatisfied with their flip phones.

Future Popularity

But being satisfied with them in the past doesn’t necessarily mean most consumers are looking forward to a flip phone-filled future. Just 33% of overall respondents said they would be likely to buy a flip phone again if they were to become readily available and popular again. 42% said they would be unlikely to ever buy a flip phone again. And 25% were neutral.

Smartphone Owners

Currently, consumers seem to be more interested in smartphones than flip phones. 56% of respondents said they currently own a smartphone. And 61% of respondents said they would be likely to buy a smartphone as their next cell phone. So it seems that unless flip phone manufacturers can integrate some smartphone features, a full-blown comeback is likely to fall short.
