Google Glass hasn’t even been widely adopted by users yet, but some businesses have already chosen to ban the device. Their reasoning mainly deals with the fact that Google Glass users may be able to record or photograph others more discreetly than they could with a smartphone or similar device. So what do people generally think about the privacy issues surrounding Google Glass? And would it impact their interest in owning the device?
Google Glass Awareness
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 25% said they know what Google Glass is. Another 27% said they have heard of Google Glass. And 49% said they’ve never heard of Google Glass. In an August 2013 survey, 23% said they knew what Google Glass was, and 22% had heard of it. So awareness of the technology has increased in the past several months, but not by much.
Potential Buyers
After learning about Google Glass, just 7% of overall respondents said they would definitely be interested in purchasing it. Another 19% said they would probably be interested in owning Google Glass. 44% said they would probably not be interested in owning Google Glass. And 30% said they are definitely not interested in Google Glass. Those who were already aware of glass were 11% more likely to be interested in owning it.
Google Glass Privacy
So what about the potential privacy issues? 29% of respondents said they would definitely be worried about their privacy if people around them were wearing Google Glass. 39% said they would probably worry about privacy issues connected with Google Glass. 25% said they would probably not worry about their privacy. And 7% said they would definitely not worry about their privacy around Google Glass. Those who expressed privacy concerns were just 3% less likely to be interested in purchasing Google Glass.
