Google Wallet Survey: Google Looking to Expand Mobile Payment Platform

Google just announced that it has acquired new technology from mobile payment system Softcard. The technology is intended to help the company make improvements to the Google Wallet payment system, which will also soon come pre-installed on all Android smartphones. Though the payment system has been around for years, it isn’t getting as much attention as more recent addition Apple Pay. So how many people have used these mobile payment systems? And how many are likely to do so in the future?

Smartphone Users

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 62% of smartphone users said they currently own an Android device, making it the most popular smartphone brand. That’s good news for Google Wallet, since it will soon come standard on all of those devices. Other than Android, 32% of respondents said they own Apple smartphones. And just 9% own other types of smartphones.

Just 8% of smartphone owners said they often use mobile payment systems like Apple Pay or Google Wallet. 10% said they sometimes use these systems. 7% have used them once or twice. And 76% of smartphone owners have never used mobile payment systems.

Mobile Payments

Even though Apple Pay has been getting a lot of attention lately, it isn’t the most used mobile payment system. 65% of those who have used mobile payment apps said they use Google Wallet. And just 35% use Apple Pay. 16% said they’ve used other mobile payment systems such as Paypal Wallet.

In general, 69% of mobile payment users said they are satisfied with their mobile payment system. Google Wallet users were 3% less likely to be satisfied with their payment system, although some of them also use Apple Pay or other systems as well.

Future Users

Of those who don’t use mobile payment systems, 24% said they would be likely to do so in the future. 49% said they are unlikely to mobile payment systems like Google Wallet. And 27% are neutral or unsure.
