Celebrating Halloween

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 31% of respondents said that they have not and don’t plan to do anything to celebrate Halloween this year. 29% said that they plan to pass out candy to trick-or-treaters tonight. 13% said they plan to go trick-or-treating. 13% said they plan to watch Halloween themed movies. 8% said they plan to attend a Halloween party. And 8% said they plan to host a Halloween party. 4% said they do other things to celebrate Halloween, such as festivals, hayrides, and pumpkin carving. Parents were 13% more likely to go out trick-or-treating. And respondents under 35 were 5% more likely to attend Halloween parties.

Halloween Purchases

Many of these Halloween activities require people to go out and buy things. But how big of an impact does this holiday have? 42% of respondents said they have bought Halloween candy. 13% have bought a costume. 8% bought other types of food for Halloween. 6% bought party supplies. And 3% bought other types of Halloween items, such as decorations and pumpkins.

Changing Plans

Overall, just 11% of respondents said that they have the same Halloween traditions that they practice every year. Another 24% said that they have some Halloween traditions, but their plans sometimes vary. 39% of respondents said that they always celebrate Halloween differently from year to year. And 27% of Americans said that they never celebrate Halloween.

This year, particularly for trick-or-treaters, the weather caused by Hurricane Sandy might have an impact on plans. 15% of those who normally celebrate Halloween said that their Halloween plans have already been changed due to Hurricane Sandy. 16% said that their plans haven’t changed yet, but it’s possible that they will. And 69% said that their plans haven’t been impacted.
