Homeowners Survey: More Plan to Buy Homes in Next Few Years

The US housing market is slowly working its way toward a recovery. But many are still hesitant to become homeowners. How many Americans have recently bought homes and how many plan to do so in the next few years? And how do Americans feel about the recovery of the housing market?



In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 52% of US respondents said that they currently own a home. Of those homeowners, 13% said that they purchased their first home within the last three years. Another 7% said they bought a new home within the last three years, though they were already homeowners. And 80% said they have not bought a home in the last three years.

Home Buyers

Alternatively, 9% of those who do not own a home said that they definitely plan to buy one within the next three years. Another 19% said that they will probably buy a home within the next three years. 42% said that they probably won’t buy a home in the next three years. And 30% said they definitely won’t buy a home in the next three years.

Of those who don’t plan to buy a home in the next few years, 16% said that they definitely do plan to buy a home at some point. 40% said they probably would like to buy a home one day. 21% said they probably would not ever buy a home. And 23% said they definitely won’t ever buy a home.

Housing Market

Only 4% of Americans said they think the housing market is making a big recovery. However, 42% said they think the US housing market is somewhat starting to improve. 29% said they aren’t really seeing much of an improvement. And 26% said they don’t think the housing market is improving at all.
