It’s Independent Retailers Week. Though large retail chains seem to be thriving, there are also plenty of thriving local and online retailers that operate independently as small businesses. These independent retailers often offer quality products and unique experiences that large chains can’t really emulate. So how many prefer to shop at these independent shops and businesses? And what are their favorite types of retailers?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, just 3% said they do all of their shopping at independent retailers rather than large chain stores. 9% said they shop at independent retailers most of the time. 46% shop at both types of stores equally. 35% said they mostly shop at large chain stores. And 7% said they only ever shop at large stores.
Of those who shop with independent retailers at least sometimes, 50% said they mostly patronize their local independent retailers. 21% mostly shop with independent retailers online. And 29% said they do both equally.
Even though few shop with independent retailers for the majority of their purchases, 47% said that they prefer to shop at small businesses rather than large chains whenever possible. And 36% said they would even pay a bit more to do so. 49% believe that independent retailers often offer more quality products than the ones found at large businesses. And 57% believe that small retailers have a more positive impact on the economy that their larger counterparts.
In general, 62% said they are likely to buy food products from independent retailers. 57% like to buy clothing and accessories from them. 46% buy home items. 24% usually buy technology and entertainment related items from independent retailers. And 9% buy other types of products like sporting goods and art.
When it comes to finding independent retailers, people often turn to larger brands or even events that showcase those types of businesses. Online marketplaces like Amazon, eBay and Etsy were popular among respondents for finding independent retailers. And local events like Farmer’s markets were also named as popular outlets.
