London Olympics Survey: Most Fans Will Use New Technology for Updates

The Summer Olympic Games in London are just around the corner, and people all around the world plan on tuning in to see their favorite athletes from their country compete. How many Americans plan to tune in this year, and what new ways will they use to keep up with the events?

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 44% of respondents said they definitely plan to watch at least some coverage of the London Olympics this year. 29% said they might watch some coverage of the Olympics. And 28% of US respondents said they don’t plan to watch any Olympic coverage.

Of those who may watch this year, 49% said they plan to tune in for the opening ceremonies, and 39% of those respondents said they plan to watch the closing ceremonies. 39% of Americans said they are unsure about whether they’ll watch the opening or closing ceremonies. And 10% said they don’t plan to watch either.

The Olympics are always a huge event, no matter who is competing, but 54% of Americans said they do have a favorite athlete or sport that they will follow closely. And 92% of survey takers who plan to watch the London Olympics said they’ve watched Olympic Games in the past, while just 8% said they’ve never tuned in for the Olympics before.

New Media

The London games might be different from previous games, however, because of all the different ways fans can keep up with coverage. 44% of Olympic watchers said they will check schedules or results from the games online. 25% said they plan to stream coverage of their favorite sports online. 16% plan to check coverage of the Olympics on their smartphone or mobile device. 18% plan to use technology in other ways to keep up with the games. And just 35% of fans said they won’t use any new technology to keep up with Olympic events.
