Over the holiday shopping season, many consumers tried out mobile shopping for the first time. In fact, design focused e-commerce platform Fab recently announced that 56% of its Christmas day revenue came from its mobile apps. Is mobile commerce becoming more mainstream? And what devices and methods do shoppers use?
Mobile Commerce
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 59% of respondents said that they currently own a smartphone or other mobile device with internet access. Of those mobile consumers, 16% said that they often make purchases other than apps using their phone or mobile device. 24% said they have used mobile devices to make purchases at least once or twice. Another 22% said that though they haven’t made any purchases using their mobile devices, they would consider it. And 37% said that they aren’t interested in mobile shopping.
Apps and Devices
26% of mobile shoppers said they have many apps that are dedicated to shopping or stores. 45% said they have just one or two apps that can be used for shopping. And 29% of mobile shoppers said that they don’t have any dedicated shopping apps.
80% of mobile shoppers said that they use their smartphones to make purchases. 38% said they use tablets. 21% said they use iPods or similar devices. And 9% use other types of mobile devices.
Online Shoppers
Though many consumers have yet to give mobile shopping a try, 29% of overall consumers said that they now shop online more often than they shop in stores. 24% said they shop online just as often as they shop in stores. 36% said that they shop in stores more often than they shop online. And just 12% said that they still never shop online. Of those who own smartphones or similar mobile devices, 35% said they shop online more than they shop in stores, and just 3% said they never shop online.
