This week, baseball fans around the country flocked to their local ballparks to see their favorite teams take the field for the first time this season. Others watched games on TV or celebrated in other ways. How big of a deal is Opening Day to these fans? And how many of them watch or attend games during the rest of the season?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, just 2% of respondents said that they attended an Opening Day baseball game this year. But another 3% said that they do plan to attend a home opener later this week. Just 9% of respondents said that while they didn’t go to an Opening Day game this year, they have attended one in the past. And 87% of respondents said that they’ve never gone to an Opening Day baseball game. In an April 2012 survey, just 3% of respondents said they attended an Opening Day game last season.
16% of respondents who didn’t attend any Opening Day games this year said that they did watch games on TV at their homes on Opening Day. Another 4% said they went to a bar or restaurant to watch games. 2% hosted or attended viewing parties. And 2% said they kept up with Opening Day games in other ways, like listening to the radio or checking updates online.
For the rest of the season, just 7% of respondents said they definitely plan to attend other baseball games this year. 16% said they will probably attend baseball games this season. 33% said they probably won’t attend any baseball games this season. And 46% said they definitely won’t.
Even though most don’t plan to actually attend many games, 13% of overall respondents said that they often watch baseball games on TV. 23% said they sometimes watch games. 29% said they rarely watch games. And 35% said they never watch baseball games on TV.
