Processed Meat Survey: Report Could Impact Eating Habits

The World Health Organization released a report this week saying that processed meats like bacon and sausage can increase cancer risk. While those food items are popular among a lot of people, such a report could have an impact on future eating habits. So how many currently eat processed meat products like those cited in the report? And how many are likely to continue eating them knowing the risks?

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 39% of respondents said they have a generally positive opinion of processed meats like bacon, hot dogs and sausage. 32% have a negative opinion of them. And 29% are neutral. However, just 16% of respondents consider those foods to be even somewhat healthy.

Health Habits

In general, 84% of respondents said they consider good health to be important. 61% consider themselves to be at least somewhat healthy. And 53% said that they have generally healthy eating habits. More specifically, 35% of respondents said they at least try to avoid foods that have been linked to diseases like cancer.

Eating Habits

Currently, 7% of respondents said that they eat processed meats like bacon and sausage daily. 20% eat them a few times per week. 23% do so about once per week. Another 23% do so a few times per month. 21% said they rarely ever eat processed meats. And just 7% never do. Looking forward, just 5% of respondents said they plan to stop eating processed meats because of the recent findings that link them to cancer. But 33% said that they plan to at least eat less of those processed meats going forward. 4% said they will actually eat more of those food items now. 45% said they don’t plan to change their eating habits at all. And 13% are still unsure.
