Sleep Survey: Lack of Sleep Likely to Impact Memory, Concentration

It’s no secret that sleep is important to overall health. More and more studies have been released showing all the effects that lack of sleep can have on different aspects of life, from concentration and memory to job performance. How many Americans think they get enough sleep each night? And how do they think it impacts them on a day-to-day basis?


Sleep Schedules

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, just 5% of respondents said they get 9 or more hours of sleep on an average night. 22% said they get about 8 hours of sleep. 20% said they get about 7 hours of sleep. 26% said they get 6 hours of sleep on an average night. 11% said they get about 5 hours of sleep. 5% said they usually get four hours of sleep or less. And 12% said that their sleep schedule always varies.

28% of Americans said that they feel they usually get enough sleep. 51% said they don’t always get enough sleep. And 21% said they definitely don’t think they get enough sleep. Of those who said they get enough sleep each night, just 8% said they get 9 or more hours per night, 37% said they get about 8 hours per night, and 27% said they get about 7 hours per night. Those who work full time were 3% less likely to say they get enough sleep.

Sleep Effects

But what happens when these people don’t get the sleep they need? 24% of respondents who don’t always get enough sleep said they think their lack of sleep often impacts their concentration and memory. 62% said they think their concentration and memory are sometimes compromised by lack of sleep. 11% said they rarely have this problem. And just 3% said they don’t think lack of sleep ever impacts their concentration or memory.

Just 7% of those respondents said they think a lack of sleep often impacts their job performance. 34% said they think their job performance is sometimes compromised by a lack of sleep. 24% said they rarely have this problem. And 8% said their job performance is never impacted by lack of sleep.

Daytime Sleeping

Not all of the people who said they usually get enough sleep necessarily get the amount that is recommended by medical professionals. However, 12% of overall respondents said they do often take naps in addition to their nightly sleep schedule. 44% said they sometimes take naps. 32% said they rarely take naps. And 12% said they never get any extra sleep during the day. Those who feel they get enough sleep were just as likely to take naps as those who feel they don’t get enough sleep.
