Smart Luggage Survey: Nearly Half Have Dealt With Lost Luggage

When an airline loses your luggage, getting it back can be a nightmare. That’s why some tech and travel companies, including AT&T and Airbus, have proposed the concept of smart luggage. This type of luggage would include GPS trackers so that airlines could easily locate the lost items. How many travelers would be interested in utilizing this technology?

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 3% of respondents said they travel via airplane at least once per month. 11% said they travel by airplane a few times per year. 14% fly once or twice per year. 13% fly every few years. 27% said they rarely fly. And 33% said they never fly.

Checked Bags

Of those who have flown on an airplane, 34% said they’ve always checked bags. 24% said they check bags most of the time when they fly. 14% said they check bags about half the time. 22% said they rarely check bags when they fly. And just 6% have never checked bags with an airline.

But more specifically, 12% of respondents who have checked bags said they have had an airline lose or misplace their luggage multiple times. 32% said that an airline has lost their luggage once. And 57% said they’ve never had an airline lose their luggage.

So what about the concept of smart luggage? 32% of travelers said they would definitely be interested in owning luggage with GPS tracking chips to prevent it from getting lost. 41% said they would probably be interested in owning smart luggage. 22% said they probably would not be interested in it. And just 5% said they would definitely not be interested.
