State of the Union Survey: Viewers Give Speech a B Grade

President Obama delivered the annual State of the Union address this week, where he spoke about many of the issues concerning the American people. How do viewers feel about the issues and how he addressed them? And how do they feel overall about the state of the country?

Grading the Speech

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 16% of respondents said they watched the entire State of the Union address Tuesday evening. Another 16% said they watched part of it. 11% said that they didn’t watch the State of the Union, but they did see coverage of the speech afterward. And 58% of respondents said they didn’t watch any of the State of the Union address Tuesday night.

36% of those who watched or saw coverage of the State of the Union gave President Obama a B grade. 23% gave him an A. 17% gave him a C. 9% said he deserved a D grade. And 15% gave him a failing grade for the State of the Union address.

Important Issues

The economy was overwhelmingly selected as one of the most important issues facing the country. 85% of those who watched the State of the Union said the economy is one of the most important issues they wanted addressed. 59% selected health care as an important issue. 40% are concerned about education. 34% are concerned about the environment. 30% said they’re concerned with immigration reform. 28% are concerned about foreign relations. 11% are concerned about family and religious issues.

Overall, 22% of viewers said that President Obama definitely addressed the issues they find most important. 32% said that he at least partially addressed the issues they care about. 22% said he didn’t really cover their important issues. 17% said he didn’t address the important issues at all. And 6% were unsure.

State of the Union

In general, just 5% of respondents said they have a very positive outlook about the current state of the union. 29% said they have a somewhat positive outlook. 38% have a somewhat negative outlook. And 28% said they have a very negative outlook about the state of the union.
