Many Americans have noticed changes in their shopping malls and main streets in recent years. Brick and mortar retail stores are closing at a rapid rate, including large chains like JC Penney and Radio Shack. How many people have noticed more store closings over the past year? And how often do they still shop at these types of stores?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, just 5% of respondents said that they shop at brick and mortar retail stores daily. 11% said they shop there a few times per week. 15% shop at retail stores about once a week. 18% shop a few times per month. 13% shop there about once per month. 24% said that they rarely shop at brick and mortar retail stores. And 16% said they never shop at these retail stores.
In general, just 12% said they shop at brick and mortar stores more often now than they did 2 years ago. 40% said they shop at brick and mortar stores less often now than they did 2 years ago. And 49% said they shop at brick and mortar stores just as often now as they did 2 years ago.
So how many of these stores been impacted by the decrease in regular customers? 14% of respondents said they have noticed many more store closures in their area this year than in previous years. 36% said that a few more stores have closed in their area this year than in previous years. 21% said about the same amount of stores have closed this year. Just 6% said that fewer stores in their area have closed this year compared with previous years. And 24% said they haven’t really noticed how many stores are closing in their area.
Online shopping has definitely had an impact on how often people shop in brick and mortar stores. But how big is that impact? Just 4% of respondents said they shop online daily. 11% said they shop online a few times per week. Another 11% shop online about once per week. 24% shop online a few times per month. 22% shop online about once per month. 20% said they rarely shop online. And just 8% said that they never shop online. Those who shop online at least once per week were 6% more likely to say that they shop in brick and mortar stores less often than they did 2 years ago. But they were also 9% more likely to say that they shop in brick and mortar stores more often than they did 2 years ago.
