Telemarketing Survey: Consumers More Likely to Sign Up for Text Alerts

A new rule regarding telemarketing and the consumers they can contact is set to go into effect this week. The rule would require marketers to get prior written consent from consumers before contacting them via call or text for promotional purposes. Many rules have already tried to regulate the telemarketing industry, but people still keep getting calls and texts. How many would give consent for contact under the new rule?

Calls and Text

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 25% of respondents said they often receive telemarketing calls. Another 38% said they receive telemarketing calls sometimes. 22% said they rarely receive them. And just 15% never do.

Text messages have also become a popular way for companies to reach out to consumers. But just 8% of respondents said they often receive promotional texts from companies. 31% said they receive these texts sometimes. 26% said they rarely receive them. And 35% never do.

Preferences

Just 15% of overall respondents said they have ever signed up to receive telemarketing calls or texts from businesses. Of those who receive telemarketing calls often or sometimes, 20% have signed up at some point. And of those who receive promotional texts often or sometimes, 32% have signed up to receive them.

Only 3% said they definitely like receiving telemarketing calls or promotional texts. 13% said they sometimes want to receive such communications. And 84% said they never want to receive any telemarketing calls or texts from businesses.

Consent

In general, 76% of respondents think that companies should definitely have to get consent from consumers in order to contact them via call or text. 16% said they think companies should probably have to get consent. 3% said they probably shouldn’t. And 6% said they definitely don’t think companies should need to have consent in order to contact consumers.
