Twitter Survey: User Base Continues Growing After 8 Years

Twitter reached its eight-year milestone last week. Since the site first launched in 2006, people around the world have begun using it to share their own updates and receive news and input from others. How do most people use the site and how have their Twitter habits changed in the past few years?

Tweeting and Reading

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 11% of Twitter users said they tweet multiple times per day. 13% said they tweet about once per day. 18% tweet a few times per week. 8% tweet about once per week. 36% of Twitter users said they rarely tweet. And 15% said they never tweet.

But you don’t have to actually send your own tweets in order to get something out of using Twitter. 16% of Twitter users said they log on multiple times per day to read tweets from others. 15% said they read others’ tweets about once per day. 16% read tweets a few times per week. 8% read tweets about once per week. 33% of Twitter users said they rarely log on to read tweets. And 13% said they never read tweets from others. And people may be logging on to Twitter more often now than they used to. In a March 2012 survey, just 12% said they logged on to read tweets multiple times per day.

Following Accounts

58% of Twitter users said they follow fewer than 100 accounts. 17% follow fewer than 200 accounts. 10% follow fewer than 300. 11% follow between 300 and 1000 Twitter accounts. And just 4% follow more than 1000 Twitter users. The average amount of accounts people follow seems to have increased, though. In the March 2012 survey, 75% followed fewer than 100 accounts.

Twitter users fall into many different categories. People can follow celebrities, news outlets, bloggers, brands, and of course: their friends. 60% of Twitter users said they follow their friends, family, and others they know personally. 41% said they follow celebrities on Twitter. 37% follow brands and businesses. 31% follow news outlets. 24% follow bloggers. 20% follow co-workers or business associates. And 16% follow other types of Twitter accounts, such as authors, TV shows and parody accounts.

Growing User Base

Even though Twitter has been around for 8 years, its user base continues to grow. 19% of Twitter users said they joined within the last year. 35% said they joined Twitter 1 to 2 years ago. 32% joined twitter 3 to 4 years ago. Just 9% said they joined Twitter 5 to 6 years ago. And 6% said they joined Twitter more than 6 years ago.
