Virtual Reality Survey: Potential Buyers Most Excited About Gaming

Netflix just became the first major video streaming service to offer content on virtual reality devices from Oculus. Oculus, the Facebook owned virtual reality company, is a major player in the up-and-coming consumer virtual reality market. But how many consumers are really interested in owning virtual reality devices like the Oculus Rift? And what types of features are they looking for in such a device?

Virtual Reality

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 45% of respondents said that they are generally interested in virtual reality. 53% of respondents said they mostly understand what virtual reality is and what it does. However, just 42% said they can see themselves ever owning a virtual reality device like the ones from Oculus.

Early Adopters

More specifically, just 22% of respondents said they would be likely to purchase a VR device like the Oculus Rift or Samsung Gear VR within the next two years. 54% said they would be unlikely to make such a purchase. And 25% were neutral or completely undecided. Of those who said they would be likely to purchase in the next two years, 62% said they fully understand what Virtual Reality is. So perhaps with some increased understanding, the number of potential customers will increase.

Important Features

For those who are interested in owning a VR device, at least in the forseeable future, there are a number of different features that may impact their buying decisions. 58% of potential buyers said they would like to be able to use their VR device for gaming. 52% want to be able to browse the internet. 51% would like to be able to watch videos, shows and movies on their devices. And 45%, more specifically, would like to be able to watch that type of content in 3D, a feature that isn’t included with the new Netflix/Oculus partnership. And 6% would like to be able to use their devices for other things, like communication and maps.
