One-Hit Wonders Survey: 80's Named Top Decade for One-Time Hits

Today is National One-Hit Wonder Day, a holiday created to celebrate all those catchy tunes from artists that only really made it big once. Throughout decades, these one-hit wonders have grabbed our attention and gotten so big that the artists behind them were never able to duplicate that success again. To celebrate those artists and their top songs, we asked respondents about their favorite one-hit wonders through the years.

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 25% of respondents said they really enjoy a lot of one-hit wonder songs. And another 49% said they at least somewhat enjoy most one-hit wonders. There were plenty of different songs and artists mentioned by respondents. Some of the top one-hit wonders mentioned include Ice Ice Baby, Mickey, Whip It, Come On Eileen, and Love Shack.

Top Decades

As the list above indicates, the 1980’s seems to be the top decade for one-hit wonders. 37% of overall respondents named the 80’s as their favorite decade for one-hit wonders. 19% prefer the 90’s. 18% like the one-hit wonders from the 70’s. 13% prefer songs from the 60’s. 9% named the 2000’s as their favorite decade for such songs. 8% said the current decade is their favorite. 4% named the 50’s. And 16% said they have no preference.

Top Genres

There’s also a wide range of genres when it comes to these songs and artists. 42% said that their favorite one-hit wonders tend to fall into the pop genre. 41% named rock as a favorite genre. 15% like rap ones. 11% like country. 10% named R&B as a favorite. And 11% said they have no preference when it comes to genre.
