Facebook recently announced some changes to its messaging system, including a move that would charge accounts a small fee to send messages to accounts outside of their network. How many Facebook users take advantage of the messaging feature very often? And how many would use it to contact those outside their group of friends, with or without paying a fee?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 77% of respondents said that they currently have a Facebook account, and another 8% said that they have had an account in the past. Of those who currently use Facebook, 26% said that they send and receive messages often. 35% said that they sometimes use the messaging feature. 26% said they rarely do. And 13% of Facebook users said that they never send messages.
Though many have sent messages, just 7% of those who have used Facebook said that they often send messages to users outside their network of friends. 14% said that they sometimes send messages to people outside their network. 24% said they rarely do. And 55% of Facebook users said that they have never used the messaging system to contact someone outside of their immediate network.
16% of Facebook users said that they sometimes receive relevant messages from other users outside their network of friends. 20% said that they mostly just receive spam messages from Facebook users they aren’t friends with. 29% said they rarely receive messages from anyone outside of their network. And 34% said they never receive these messages.
Only 4% of users said that they would definitely pay a dollar to contact a Facebook user outside their network of friends if they needed to. 6% said that they might consider it. And 90% of Facebook users said that they would definitely not pay a dollar fee to send messages to users outside their network of friends. Of those who would consider paying a fee, 33% said they often send messages outside their network, and 24% said they sometimes do.
