A scripted YouTube sitcom called MyMusic just signed on for its second season. Though having traditional sitcoms and shows take place on YouTube is a relatively new concept, the site is trying to promote its official channels with new types of content. So there could potentially be more YouTube series premiering in the future. Are consumers interested in that possibility?

But not all of those who watch videos on YouTube necessarily subscribe or follow particular channels. 18% of respondents said they have many favorite YouTube channels that they watch regularly. 23% said they have one or two favorite YouTube channels. And 58% of those who watch videos on YouTube said they don’t have any favorite YouTube channels.

YouTube Series

More specifically, just 9% said they have watched sitcoms or other scripted TV series on YouTube. 14% said they definitely would watch scripted TV shows on YouTube. 37% said they probably would. 29% said they probably would not. And 11% said they definitely wouldn’t watch scripted shows on YouTube.

Social media platforms like Facebook and Foursquare are trying to get more into the local search market. Local businesses have the ability to set up a presence on these sites, allowing for increased discoverability. But many consumers still turn to more traditional search methods like Google and Yelp before looking for local businesses on such social platforms. How would consumers describe their local search habits? And have many of them used social platforms to find local businesses?

Local Search

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 38% of respondents said they often search for local businesses using Google or other search engines. 19% often search for local businesses using their phone or mobile device. 15% often use social platforms like Facebook or Foursquare to find information about local businesses. And just 8% said they often search for local businesses using reviews sites like Yelp.

First Choices

But more specifically, 60% said that if they were looking for information about a local business, Google would be the first place they would go. 16% said they would go directly to the business’s website. 9% said they would call the business or just go there in person. 5% said they would search on Facebook or Foursquare first. 4% said they would search using their mobile device or mobile apps. 2% said they would use Yelp or similar sites. And 5% said they would use other methods, such as the phone book or asking a friend.

Social Platforms

But even though social platforms aren’t the most popular sources for information about local businesses, nearly half have used them to find new businesses at some point. 10% said they have found many new local businesses on social platforms like Facebook and Foursquare. And 30% have found one or two new businesses on social platforms.

Congress is again considering taking action in the cable channels market. Currently, cable providers only offer channels in large bundles and packages, but some argue that they should have to offer channels individually. Would the option to add individual channels be beneficial for cable customers? And would it entice any new consumers to buy cable TV service?

Cable Customers

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 60% of respondents said they currently have cable service. Of those customers, just 10% said they watch all the channels in their current cable package. 19% said they’ve watched most of their channels. Another 19% said they’ve watched about half of their channels. 28% of cable customers said they have watched less than half of the channels in their current package. 22% said they only watch a few channels. And 2% said they don’t watch TV at all.

Cable Channels

Since many customers don’t take advantage of their full channel package, logic would dictate that having individual channel options would solve this problem. But what would buyers prefer? 74% of current cable customers said they would prefer to choose individual channels rather than packaged bundles of channels. Only 10% said they would prefer channel bundles to individual channels. And 16% said they are undecided.

Potential Customers

Of the 23% of overall respondents who had cable service in the past and the 18% who don’t have cable at all, 24% said they would definitely be more likely to buy cable service if they had the option to buy channels individually. 36% said they would probably be more likely to purchase cable service. 26% said they probably wouldn’t be any more likely to get cable. And 14% said they definitely wouldn’t be more likely to get cable.

Springtime for many Americans means warmer weather, blooming flowers, and outdoor activities. But for others, it’s known as allergy season. Seasonal allergies can be incredibly bothersome and even keep some people from enjoying their favorite outdoor activities. How many Americans suffer from seasonal allergies, and in what ways do allergies impact their everyday lives?

Allergy Sufferers

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 28% of US respondents said that they suffer from seasonal allergies every year. Another 34% said that they have sometimes experienced seasonal allergy symptoms. And 39% said they have never suffered from seasonal allergies.

Allergy Effects

When asked how bothersome their allergies can be, 42% gave their allergies a 4 rating, on a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being the most bothersome). 13% gave their allergies a 5 rating. And just 2% of allergy sufferers said their allergies are not bad at all, giving them a rating of 1.

However, just 8% of allergy sufferers said that their allergies often keep them from going certain places or doing certain activities. 35% said that their allergies sometimes impact their plans. 42% said it’s rare that their allergies have any impact on their activities. And 15% said their allergies never impact their plans.

Allergy Treatments

Part of the reason that allergies might not impact many plans is the treatment options that are available. 74% of allergy sufferers said that they have taken medication for their allergy symptoms. 23% said they have tried natural treatments. And 10% said they have tried allergy shots. Just 11% of allergy sufferers said that they haven’t tried any treatments. In general, 19% of sufferers said they found the treatments they’ve used to be very effective, and 63% found them to be somewhat effective.

The amount of American workers who are living “paycheck to paycheck” has risen in recent years due to the economy and the tough job market. Those hardships have also led to difficulties for businesses, since those Americans have to cut down on their purchases and can only shop once they’ve received their most recent paycheck. How many Americans are currently living paycheck to paycheck, and how does it impact their purchasing behaviors?

Paycheck to Paycheck

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 40% of US respondents said that they are definitely living paycheck to paycheck. Another 20% said they live paycheck to paycheck most of the time. 18% said they live paycheck to paycheck sometimes. And just 23% of Americans said they are not living paycheck to paycheck. Respondents between 35 and 54 were 7% more likely to live paycheck to paycheck. Of those with a household income of at least $75,000 annually, 61% said they still live paycheck to paycheck at least sometimes.

Of those who live paycheck to paycheck, 26% said they have been doing so for over 15 years. 14% said they have been living paycheck to paycheck for between 10 and 15 years. 9% said it has been 7 to 9 years. 16% said it has been 4 to 6 years. 23% said it has been 2 to 3 years. And 12% said it has been just a year or less.

Paycheck Cycles

Of those living paycheck to paycheck, 56% said that it very much impacts how and when they can buy things like gas and groceries. 35% said that their paycheck cycles somewhat impact when they can buy things like gas and groceries. And 9% said that their paycheck cycles don’t impact their buying habits at all.

In the event of an emergency, just 36% of overall respondents said they have “rainy day” savings. Another 16% said that though they don’t have their own savings, they do have access to funds in the event of an emergency. And 50% said they don’t have any access to emergency savings. Of those living paycheck to paycheck, just 27% said they have savings, and 20% said they have access to funds in the event of an emergency.

Priorities

When asked to identify the most important uses for their paychecks, most respondents put having enough money for essentials like food and transportation above paying bills on time. Paying off debt or remaining debt free was generally the third most important. And saving money for emergencies was ranked higher than saving money for the future.

After the recent bombings in Boston, some high-level government officials made comments that have some Americans worried about their privacy and civil liberties. The comments dealt with the government’s access to phone conversations and other types of digital communication. What do Americans think about the anti-terrorism policies that might impact privacy and civil liberties? Which issue do they feel is more important?

Digital Communications

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 40% of respondents said that they constantly use forms of digital communication, such as phone and email. 23% said they use digital communication a few times per day. 27% said they use digital communication daily. Fewer than 10% said they use digital communication less than once per day. And just 2% said they never use it.

So the vast majority of Americans would be impacted if these communications were monitored, but how do they feel about the issue at hand? 69% of those who use digital communication methods said that they would feel like it was a violation of privacy for their conversations to be monitored. Just 13% said they would feel safer knowing the government had access to these communications. And 19% said they wouldn’t care either way.

Important Issues

Looking forward, just 5% of Americans said that they would definitely support new anti-terrorism policies that may restrict civil liberties, such as increased phone surveillance. 28% said they would probably support such policies. 40% said they would probably not support such policies.

The prevalence of online video ads has risen in recent years, with many sites like YouTube hosting short commercials before each video. TV commercials are a more traditional form of advertising, but are online video ads catching up in terms of popularity and effectiveness? How many viewers pay attention to each type of ad?

Online Videos

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 16% of respondents said that they watch online videos multiple times per day. 17% said that they watch online videos daily. 28% said they watch online videos several times per week. 10% watch them about once per week. 20% said they rarely watch online videos. And 9% said they never watch them.

Only 5% of online video viewers said they always pay attention to the ads that play before or during online videos. 14% said they pay attention most of the time. 22% said they pay attention to online video ads about half the time. 41% said they rarely pay attention to online video ads. And 18% said they never do.

TV Shows

On the other hand, 24% of respondents said that they watch TV shows multiple times per day. 36% said they watch TV shows daily. 21% watch them a few times per week. 5% said they watch about once per week. 9% said they rarely watch TV shows. And just 6% said they never do.

6% of TV viewers said that they always pay attention to the commercials that play during TV shows. 15% said they pay attention to TV commercials most of the time. 30% said they pay attention about half the time. 40% said they rarely pay attention. And 12% said they never pay attention to TV commercials.

Advertising Impact

So while Americans still seem to watch more TV shows than online videos, the amount who pay attention to each type of ad is very similar. However, only 8% of overall respondents said they think online video ads are more effective than TV ads, while 35% said they think TV ads are more effective than online video ads. 25% said they think the two are equally effective. And 32% had no opinion.
