With the recent release of Microsoft’s Surface tablet, many have begun wondering about the possibility of a laptop tablet hybrid, since certain models of each device have begun to take on some of the characteristics of the other. So do tablet owners show interest in laptop features and do laptop owners show interest in tablet features?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 51% of respondents said they currently own a laptop but not a tablet. Of those respondents, 18% said that they also definitely plan to purchase a tablet. Another 25% said they will probably buy a tablet at some point. 33% said they might buy a tablet at some point. 21% of laptop owners said they don’t see the need to buy a tablet because they have a laptop. And just 3% said they don’t want a tablet for other reasons.
5% of overall respondents said they currently own a tablet but not a laptop. 25% said they own both. And 19% don’t own either a tablet or a laptop.
17% of tablet owners said they definitely plan to buy a laptop as well. 44% said they will probably buy one at some point. 33% said they might consider buying a laptop at some point. Just 5% of tablet owners said they don’t see the point in buying a laptop because they already have a tablet. And no tablet owners said they don’t want a laptop for other reasons.
Overall, 27% of consumers said they would definitely want to purchase a laptop tablet hybrid if one became available. 42% said they would probably be interested in such a device. 25% said they probably wouldn’t be interested. And just 6% said they definitely wouldn’t be interested in buying a device that was a mix between a laptop and a tablet.
Of those who own just a laptop, 20% said they would definitely be interested in a hybrid device and 47% said they would probably be interested. Of those who own just a tablet, 44% said they would definitely be interested in a hybrid device and 28% said they would probably be interested. And of those who own both devices, 36% said they would definitely be interested in a device that combined the two, and 45% said they would probably be interested.
