In the days during and after Hurricane Sandy made landfall in the US, many Americans discovered new and different ways to contribute to helpful organizations such as The Red Cross. One prominent fundraising tactic was the collection of donations through text messages. How many Americans have donated this way and how many would be open to doing so?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 52% of respondents said that they have text messaging on their phones and they use the feature often. 29% said they have text messaging on their phones but they don’t use it often. Just 9% said that their phone does not have text messaging capability. And 10% said they don’t have a cell phone at all.
Overall, 10% of Americans said that they donate money to charity organizations at least once per month. 19% said they donate money to charity several times per year. 22% said they make donations once or twice per year. 18% said they donate money less than once per year. And 31% said they never make charitable donations.
Of those who make charitable donations, 32% said that their donations are normally $10 or less. 27% said their donations are normally between $10 and $25. 12% said they normally donate between $25 and $50. 3% said they usually donate between $50 and $75. Another 3% said they donate between $75 and $100. 4% said they typically donate more than $100. And 20% said that the amount of their donations always varies.
In general, 11% of respondents said that they would definitely donate more often if there were more convenient ways to do so. 34% said that they would probably donate more often. 43% said they probably wouldn’t donate any more often. And 12% said that they definitely wouldn’t donate any more often if there were more convenient ways to do so.
Particularly for mobile donations, 8% of respondents said that they have already used text messaging on their mobile phones to donate to charitable organizations. 7% of people said they haven’t done so but they would definitely consider it. 8% said that they would text donations if they had the ability to do so. 25% said they might consider texting donations to charity. And 53% said they definitely would not.
