Music streaming service Spotify recently announced increased features for its free mobile service. The app still doesn’t allow users to choose all of the songs they listen to in order, unless they buy the premium app, but it does make it easier for mobile users of the free service to control their listening experience. How many people might this type of app impact? How many already listen to mobile music and in what forms?
Mobile Music
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 25% of respondents said that they often listen to music on mobile devices. 27% said they sometimes listen to mobile music. 18% rarely listen to mobile music. And 31% said they never listen to music on mobile devices.60% of those who listen to music on mobile devices said they use their smartphones. 48% listen to music on iPods or other types of MP3 players. 24% listen to music on tablet devices. And 8% listen to music on other mobile devices, such as portable gaming systems.
Streaming Music
Many mobile users simply listen to their own library of music, but streaming services like Spotify and Pandora are also gaining a lot of popularity. 11% of those who have mobile music apps said that they only listen to their own music on mobile devices. 24% said they mostly listen to their own library of music. 43% said they sometimes listen to their own library of music and sometimes stream music. 17% said they mostly stream music on mobile devices. And just 4% said they only ever stream music on mobile devices.
Music Apps
But there are a few different types of music apps, ranging from free radio apps to those that allow you to choose each song and usually charge a monthly fee. 28% of overall respondents said that they use multiple different music streaming apps on their mobile devices. 31% said they use one mobile music app. And 40% said they don’t use any.Of those who have at least one music app on their mobile devices, 13% said they have multiple premium apps that they pay for. 15% said they have one premium paid music app. And 72% don’t use any paid music streaming apps.You can view the complete survey results in the widget below and be sure to click “Open Full Report” to take advantage of all the chart and filter options.Photo Credit: Mobile Music from FlickrWhat do you want to know?
