The way Americans communicate is changing. Phone calls have turned into text messages and in-person chats are turning into online chats. A new Time Mobility Poll indicates that Americans mainly find this new communication helpful. What do US consumers think about the way technology is changing communication? And are some still holding onto more traditional types of communication?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 43% of Americans said that their preferred method of communication for everyday conversations is to speak to someone in person. 22% said that they prefer to speak with people over the phone. 21% said they prefer text messaging. And 12% said they prefer to speak to others online.
Even though many still prefer talking to others in person, 61% of overall respondents said they think the way they communicate has changed greatly over the past five years. 31% said the way they communicate has changed somewhat over the past five years. And just 9% said they haven’t changed the way they communicate over the past five years.
50% of consumers said they think being constantly connected with technology is mostly helpful. 20% said they think being connected is more of a burden. And 11% said they don’t have any opinion on the matter. The remaining 20% said they don’t think they are constantly connected with technology.
But many think that being connected isn’t always appropriate, either. 15% of respondents said they think that text messaging and similar forms of communication are inappropriate in most situations. 73% said they think text messaging can be inappropriate in some situations. And 8% said they think this type of new communication can be inappropriate in rare situations. Just 5% don’t think text messaging and similar forms of communication are ever inappropriate.
