iPad 3 [Infographic]

The rumor is that the iPad 3 announcement will come in the first week of March, but doesn’t specify when it will be released. For reference, the iPad 2 was announced on March 2nd of last year, and available on the 11th.

There are some significant changes expected and to gain a better understanding on the current state of the American consumers’ current iPad usage and anticipation of the iPad 3, AYTM conducted DIY market research utilizing our online consumer panel and survey tool. So, in the first paragraph you say that current owners are >3X likely to purchase an iPad within the first six months, then use the current market penetration to determine that 10m units will sell in the first six months and ~78% (~7.8m) of them will be to new buyers.

How exactly do those two numbers square up?

It should be 75% of the estimated 10 million owners will be first time buyers.

311 million Americans. 10% penetration yields 31 million iPad owners. 3x more likely to upgrade. So that means of the 280 million non-iPad users, (280) / ((3*31)+280) = 75% of the population will be new non-iPad owners.

Well, people are addicted to the games, Web sites and apps that are only available in Flash. It was the single most popular request which doesn’t mean that the majority of the current iPad owners are missing the Flash Player (good 12-15% are though).
