Restaurant Delivery

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 6% of consumers said that they last ordered food for delivery within the past day. 16% have within the past week. Another 16% have within the past month. 14% last ordered food for delivery within the past three months. 9% have within the past year. 10% said it’s been more than a year since they last ordered food for delivery. And 29% are not delivery consumers at all.Of those delivery consumers, 63% said that they normally place orders by phone. 42% said they regularly order food for delivery online. And 10% order from mobile apps. Pizza Hut, Papa John’s, Domino’s and Chinese restaurants were the most popular delivery restaurants mentioned by respondents.

Third Party Services

In addition, 6% of delivery customers said they often use third-party food delivery services like GrubHub to order food. 9% said they sometimes use these services. 11% rarely use them. And 74% never do. Looking forward, 21% said they’re likely to use third party food delivery services within the next year.

Carryout Customers

Aside from delivery, consumers can also use online ordering and some third-party apps or services to order carryout. 11% of respondents said they’ve ordered food for carryout within the past day. 25% have ordered carryout within the past week. 22% have within the past month. 12% have within the past three months. 7% have within the past year. 6% said that it’s been more than a year since they last ordered food for carryout. And 18% aren’t carryout consumers at all.Additionally, 45% of carryout consumers said they normally order carryout by phone. Another 45% usually order in person. 27% order online. And 8% use mobile apps. Pizza and Chinese restaurants were also the most popular among carryout consumers. But respondents also mentioned Subway, KFC and similar restaurants as some of their favorite spots for carryout.

Key Takeaways

Restaurant delivery is moderately popular with consumers, though carryout is still a more popular option. However, delivery consumers are more likely to order their food online or on mobile apps than carryout customers are. In addition, delivery customers are more likely to order directly from restaurants, either by phone or online, than they are to use third-party services like GrubHub. Since there are so many carryout customers who call or order their food in person and wait at the restaurant, that could be a potential area for GrubHub and similar services to grow their customer base. Consumers might see less of a need to use a service like this for carryout, but if companies can highlight the convenience aspect of ordering ahead online or on mobile so the food is ready when you get there, they could appeal to more carryout customers. And many of those customers also regularly order food for delivery. So if they get used to the app or service when ordering carryout, they could be more likely to use it for delivery purchases as well. You can view the complete survey results in the widget below and be sure to click “Open Full Report” to take advantage of all the chart and filter options.Photo Credit: Delivery vehicles by Alex Thomson under CC BY-SA 2.0What do you want to know?
