Facebook has privacy advocates concerned yet again, this time because of some terms and conditions associated with the Facebook Messenger app. Facebook recently separated the messaging feature entirely from its mobile app, but many have not signed up for the Messenger app because of privacy concerns. So how do users feel about Facebook privacy and the Messenger app?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 82% of respondents said they currently have a Facebook account. Another 5% said they have had one in the past. And 13% have never used Facebook.
Just 13% of Facebook users said they are very satisfied with Facebook’s privacy policies. 38% said they are somewhat satisfied with Facebook’s privacy policies. 24% said they are somewhat unsatisfied. And 13% said they are very unsatisfied with them. The remaining 12% said they are undecided.
More specifically, 34% of Facebook users said they currently use the Facebook Messenger app. Another 13% said they have used it in the past, but don’t anymore. And 54% said they’ve never used the Facebook Messenger app.
Overall, 46% of Facebook users said that they were not aware of the controversy surrounding Facebook Messenger’s policies. But 29% said they are aware of the app’s terms and conditions, which have caused controversy, and that’s why they’ve chosen not to use the app. 15% said they’ve heard about the terms but aren’t bothered by them. And 10% said they continue to use the app despite the privacy concerns.

Privacy concerns like the controversy surrounding Facebook Messenger seem to come up often, but people continue using the sites and apps involved anyway. Part of that could be that people aren’t aware of the issues because they don’t read the terms. In fact, just 11% said they always read the privacy policies or terms of the sites or apps they use. 22% said they read these terms most of the time. 25% said they read them about half the time. 28% said they rarely read the privacy policies of the sites and apps they use. And 14% said they never do.
