Grilled cheese sandwiches are a favorite lunch food for many Americans. In fact, this month is dedicated to celebrating the food item; April is National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Month. So how many people enjoy eating grilled cheese sandwiches regularly? And what are their favorite types of cheese and other ingredients to include on their sandwiches?
Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 78% of respondents said they have a generally positive opinion of grilled cheese sandwiches. Just 7% said they dislike grilled cheese sandwiches. And 15% are neutral about them.
8% of respondents like grilled cheeses enough to eat them at least once per week. 22% eat them a few times per month. Another 22% eat them about once per month. Yet another 22% said they eat grilled cheese sandwiches a few times per year. 2% eat them about once per year. 17% said they rarely ever eat grilled cheese sandwiches. And just 7% never eat them.
Favorite Cheese Products
Overall, American cheese seems to be the favorite type of cheese for sandwiches; 67% said they enjoy American cheese on their grilled sandwiches. 53% enjoy cheddar. 26% prefer Swiss cheese. 22% like grilled cheese sandwiches with mozzarella cheese. 20% prefer provolone. 13% like muenster cheese. 11% like gouda. 10% like havarti. 4% like brie. And 5% prefer other cheeses like pepper jack or colby on their sandwiches.
In terms of brands, 67% said they like using Kraft cheese on their grilled cheese sandwiches. 39% prefer Sargento cheese. 33% like Velveeta on their sandwiches. 17% like Borden cheese. 11% like Sara Lee brand. 9% like cheese from Laughing Cow. 7% like Horizon cheese. And 15% enjoy cheese from other brands like specialty artisan cheese companies or store brands.
But while cheese is clearly the most important ingredient to a grilled cheese sandwich, lots of people like to add other ingredients every now and again to give their sandwiches a little something extra. The most popular added ingredient to grilled cheese sandwiches seems to be tomato slices. Many people also like adding meats like ham and bacon. And others mentioned ingredients like onion, turkey, pepper, avocado, spinach, broccoli, bologna and garlic.
