Children's Tablet Survey: Half of Tablet Owners Let Children Use Their Devices

Toys R Us is reportedly launching a new tablet made specifically for young users. The tablet market has been growing steadily, and some regular tablets have already been used by children. But is there a place in the market for a tablet made especially for children? How do current tablet owners and parents feel about the use of technology by young people?

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 25% of consumers said they currently own a tablet device, and 32% of parents said they currently own a tablet device. Another 18% of respondents said they don’t currently own a tablet, but they definitely plan to buy one in the near future. And 58% don’t own a tablet and have no immediate plans to buy one. 50% of tablet owners said they have let children use their tablet. Another 8% said they have not let children use their tablet, but they would have no problem doing so. And 42% said they would not let children use their tablet device. 74% of parents who own tablets said they have let their kids use their devices.

7% of overall respondents said they have already purchased a tablet specifically for their kids or other young relatives. Another 9% said they would definitely consider buying a tablet for their kids. 14% said they would consider buying a tablet for their kids if it was a childproofed, inexpensive version. 24% said they might consider it. And 47% of consumers said they would not consider buying a tablet device for kids. Fathers were more likely than mothers to say they would buy their kids their own tablet device. They were also more likely to have let their kids use their tablet device.

Technology

In general, 44% of respondents said they think it is very important for kids to learn how to use technology at a young age. Another 31% said they think it is somewhat important for kids to learn technology at a young age. 9% said they don’t think it is that important. And 17% said they think that kids are actually starting to use technology too young.
