Restaurant ordering platform GrubHub has given people around the US different ways to order food from local restaurants for takeout and delivery. And after a successful IPO, even more people are considering the impact the company could have on the restaurant industry. So how many consumers have used GrubHub or similar services to order food? And how might it impact more traditional ordering methods.

Placing Orders

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, just 3% of respondents said they order food for carryout or delivery every day. 15% said they usually order food for carryout or delivery a few times per week. 19% said they order carryout or delivery about once per week. 20% place orders a few times per month. 14% said they place orders about once per month. 20% rarely order food for carryout or delivery. And just 11% said they never do.But it seems that more traditional methods are still the most popular for placing carryout or delivery orders. 51% of those who order food for carryout or delivery said they usually do so by phone. 44% said they usually place food orders in person. 32% said they regularly order food online. And just 4% said they regularly use mobile apps to order food.

GrubHub Customers

More specifically, just 6% of respondents said they have ordered food with GrubHub many times. Another 8% said they have used GrubHub for online or mobile ordering once or twice. And 86% said they’ve never used GrubHub to order food. So that’s not a very large amount of consumers as a whole who have used the service. But of those who order food online, 20% have used GrubHub. And of those who order using mobile apps, 36% have used GrubHub. So it is still a big part of a potentially growing industry.

Other Mobile Apps

There are a few different services that aim to provide the same ordering abilities as GrubHub, but not any that have matched its early success. However, there are some restaurants that have released or have begun working on their own mobile apps for online ordering. However, just 4% of overall respondents said they have multiple different mobile apps for specific restaurants. Another 16% said they have just one or two apps for specific restaurants.
