Hobbies Survey: Most Have Made Hobby Related Purchases

January is National Hobby Month, a time set aside to celebrate the importance of hobbies, which can range from collecting old coins to playing sports or even building things. So how many people currently have hobbies that they practice regularly? And what are the most popular areas of interest out there?

Hobbies

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 56% of respondents said that they have multiple hobbies. 24% said they just have one real hobby that they practice or participate in regularly. And 20% said they don’t have any hobbies.

In general, 74% of overall respondents consider having hobbies to be important. However, 66% agree that they can also be time consuming. And 66% said that they wish they had more time for hobbies in their lives.

Popular interests

There are so many different types of hobbies and interests out there. But there are several larger categories that encompass a lot of popular hobbies. 42% said that they have hobbies that are related to games. 41% enjoy art and craft type hobbies. 39% said they enjoy collecting things. 30% enjoy the outdoors. 20% enjoy things related to sports or athletics. And 8% enjoy building things.

More specifically, respondents named some of their popular hobbies as playing video games, reading, gardening, photography, jewelry making, hiking, sewing, crocheting, writing, painting, coin collecting and fishing.

Hobby purchases

Overall, 29% of respondents said that they often make purchases related to their hobbies. 51% sometimes make hobby related purchases. 16% rarely do. And just 4% never do. The most popular places where people make their hobby related purchases are Amazon and Walmart. But some people also mentioned stores like Michael’s, JoAnn’s, Hobby Lobby, flea markets, Home Depot and eBay.
