This year, more consumers than ever bought smartphones. And a big portion of those consumers bought phones that are larger than traditional smartphones. These phones, sometimes called Phablets, grew in popularity this year due in part to the release of the iPhone 6 Plus. So what do people think about these phablets? And are people likely to continue buying them in the future?
In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 61% of respondents said they currently own a smartphone. However, just 25% of those smartphone owners would categorize their phone as a phablet or larger smartphone. These might include models like the iPhone 6 Plus or Galaxy Note. In general, 46% of respondents own a tablet device. Smartphone owners were actually 10% more likely to also own a tablet. And those who own a larger smartphone were 34% more likely to own one.
In general, 69% of respondents said they are satisfied with the size of their smartphone. 27% said they wish they had a larger phone. And just 4% wish they had a smaller smartphone. Those who own phablets or larger phones were 16% more likely to be satisfied with the size of their phones. However, there are a lot of ways people use their smartphones for which a larger screen might come in handy. 73% of smartphone owners said they use their phones for mobile web browsing. 36% read books or articles on their smartphones. 31% use their phones to watch TV or movies. 26% create documents or take notes on their phones. And just 16% don’t do any of those activities on their phones.
Looking forward, 44% of smartphone owners said they would be unlikely to buy a phablet or larger smartphone in the future. 39% said they would be likely to buy a phablet as their next phone. Those who already own a phablet were 14% more likely to be interested in buying another one as their next phone purchase.
