Some people don’t like the idea of being a senior citizen. But the age qualification does have some perks. While there are some different definitions of what being a senior citizen actually means, plenty of different businesses and organizations offer discounts and other promotions to some of their more seasoned customers. So in honor of Senior Citizen’s Day, we asked people what they think about their favorite senior discounts and how those deals might impact their buying behavior.

Senior Citizens

In Ask Your Target Market’s latest survey, 58% of respondents ages 55 and over said they consider themselves to be senior citizens. However, for those at the lower end of that age range (under 65), just 40% consider themselves to be senior citizens. Males were also a bit more likely than females to be accepting of the senior citizen title.

Senior Discounts

Overall, 26% of respondents 55 and older said they regularly get senior discounts at stores, restaurants and other businesses. 22% have done so many times. 21% said they have gotten a senior discount at least once in the past. And 31% never have. McDonald’s, Denny’s and Golden Corral were the top brands mentioned for senior discounts. And those discounts can certainly have a big impact on buying behaviors. 65% said that they are more likely to patronize businesses that offer senior discounts for which they qualify.

Future Seniors

While not everyone necessarily qualifies for senior discounts just yet, many are still looking forward to them. 38% said they would be very likely to go out of their way to support businesses that offer senior discounts when they qualify as a senior. Another 35% said they would be likely or somewhat likely to do so.
